Teaching aims
Learning outcomes

1.Learn that there are three types of materials: opaque, transparent and translucent.

2. Understand that opaque materials don't let light through and do cast shadow.

3. Understand that transparent materials do let light through, and do cast shadow.

4. Understand that translucent materials partially let light through, do cast shadow but you can't see through them.

Children will be able to:

1. Memorise key vocabulary.

2. Memorise and use phrases.

3. Talk about three different types of materials.

1. Tell children that they are going to watch a PowerPoint presentation about the different types of materials.

2. Elicit through discussion that some materials are opaque, transparent and translucent. Invite puils to suggest how we could find out which materials are opaque, transparent and translucent. In groups children test a variety of materials with a touch to establish if:

a) opaque - don't let light through, do cast shadow.

b) transparent - do let light through, do cast shadow.

c) translucent - partially let light through, do cast shadows, can't see through it.

3. Children complete worksheet 19 to reinforce the idea that some things block light. In this activity children are asked to look around the classroom ans to find six things that block light and six that let light through.

4. Ask pupild the following questions: What do you notice about the things that block light? What do you notice about the things that let light through?

4. Children each write a short written report on their findings. One member of the group gives an oral account to the class.
