Learning outcomes

1. Learn that all lenses are transparent, shaped and can bend light.

2. Lea that lenses affect how we see things by affecting beams of light.

3. Understand that convex lenses change the direction of light to meet a point.

4. Learn that concave lenses change the direction of light outwards.

5. Learn how to make ray drawings of convex and concave lenses.

Children will be able to:

1. Memorise key vocabulary.

2. Memorise and use phrase.

3.Skill use of dropper.

4. Make accurate ray drawings of convex lens.

5.Produce accurate ray drawings of concave lens.

6. State differences between concave and convex lenses.

7. Be aware that lenses change the direction of light.

1. Explain that light travels in straight lines from the sun to the Earth. Its speed slows down when it passes through air, glass and water.

2. Tell pupils that they are going to do an activity in which they are going to explore different lenses. There are two main types of lenses - convex and concave. Select and display a convex and concave lens. Pupils describe the differences between the lenses. One goes in a while, the other goes out. Match labels to each lens. To remember which lens is which, concave lenses go in like a cave, while the convex lens goes out. Children watch a PowerPoint presentation.

3. Observe objects through a magnifying glass or hand lens. Discuss.

4. Children complete worksheet 22.
