Teaching Aims
Learning Outcomes

1. Understand that stems transport water upwards to the leaves and support the leaves.

2. Learn that leaves produce food for the plant using energy from the sun. This is called photosynthesis.

3. Plants need soil, light, water and air in order to grow.

Children will be able to:

1. Memorise key vocabulary.

2. Memorise and use key phrases.

3. Recognise what the different parts of the plants do.

4. Describe different plants.

1. Ask and discuss the following questions:
- What do you think would happen if I put my favorite classroom plant in the closet for the rest of the year? Why do you think that might be?
- What do you think plants need to live?
- Have you heard the word photosynthesis?
- What do you know about it? (Do not go into detail at this point, however.)
- Do you think plants can grow with any kind of light?
- Ask students what they think would happen if trees outside were covered and had no light. Ask what could cause this (lack of light and trees being covered) to happen.
- Why do you think plant survival is important? (Be sure students understand that because of the food chain, all animals rely on plants for survival.)

2. Tell students they are going to set up a test to see what happens when part of a plant or a whole plant does not get light.

3. Set up the following experiment to find out the effect of light and dark on plants.

You need two boxes of cress or two herb plants. Leave one by the window and the other in a a dark cupboard for at least a week. Check the colour and condition of the leaves daily. Record findings and discuss at the end of the observation period. Elicit the conclusion that plants need light.Remind pupils that light is a form of energy and tell pupils that the leaves use the energy in the sunlight to produce food.

4. Tell pupils that they are going to complete worksheet 10.

Language of learning

1. Key words needed: roots, ground, water, soil, stems, leaves, photosynthesis, light, air.

2. Key phrases needed:

- Stems transport water upwards to the leaves.

- Stems support the leaves.

- Leaves produce food for the plant using energy from the sun. This is called photosynthesis.

- Plants need soil, light, water and air in order to grow.

Language for learning

- How to describe the different parts of a plant.

- Understanding instructions.

- How to deal with not understanding.

- The language to ask and answer questions.

Language through learning

- Language to carry out worksheet tasks.

Make sure pupils realise that plants are living things and should be respected.
