| 1. Learn that Vertebrates
can be divided into five sets: mammals, birds, fish, reptiles, and amphibians.
2. Understand that there are different types of vertebrates. |
Children will be able to: 1. Memorise key vocabulary. 2. Memorise and use phrases comparing the different types of vertebrates. 3. Talk about different types of vertebrates. |
1. Ask pupils to recall the definition of the term "vertebrate". Use a selection of pictures of animals. Ask pupils to pair them. (The selection should include mammals, birds, fish, reptiles and amphibians.) 2. Tell pupils that they are going to watch a Watch a PowerPoint presentation about animals. 3. Ask pupils different questions: Do these animals have a backbone? Elicit that they are all vertebrates. Using the pictures as a stimulus, ask pupils to suggest names for each set. Establish through discussion that vertebrates are divided into five groups: fish, amphibians, reptiles, birds and mammals. 4. Pupils then complete Worksheet 2 in which they have to: - Classify different types of animals. - Write the names of the different groups of vertebrates.
N.B.Whales and dolphins which are mammals are included.
