1.Learn about the Earth movements. 2. Understand that the Earth orbits the sun. 3. Learn that the Earth spins causing day and night. 4. Understand that it takes a whole year (365 days) for the Earth to orbit the sun.
|
Children will be able to: 1. Memorise key vocabulary. 2. Memorise and use phrases. 3. Talk about the Earth movements. |
1. Children observe the position of the sun on the window of the classroom at different times of the day. Record the movement with yellow circles and join with a thread. Discuss the observation that the sun appears to move across the sky from the eastern horizon to the setting in the western part of the sky. 2. Discuss the previous activity which appears to show that the sun was moving across the sky. Ask the children to imagine that they are on a roundabout which is moving and their friends are standing still watching them. As we go round and round, it seems that the friends are going by you as you move round. So it is with the Earth and the sun. Use the pupils to demonstrate through movement that the Earth orbits the sun and it spins as it moves round. It takes a whole year (365 days) for the Earth to orbit the sun. 3.Pupils watch a PowerPoint presentation and carry out activity 1 in worksheet 29. Elicit through discussion that when the sun's light shines on Spain, the sun will be visible and this daylight (day). When the sun goes down, the light does not shine on Spain and there is darkness (night). 4. Pupils complete activity 2 in worksheet 29. Repeat the activity with the globe and torch. Locate Spain and Australia on the globe. Elicit through observation that when it is daytime in Spain, in other part of the world it is night time.
