1.Elicit through discussion that the Solar System is a collection of planets and moons and the stars they orbit. We live on planet Earth. It is one of nine planets in the solar system. Invite pupils to share their knowledge of the planets orally. Elicit through discussion that the nine planets are: Mercury, Venus, Earth, Mars, Jupiter, Saturn, Uranus, Neptune and Pluto. Explain that we are going to find out more information about the Solar System in the course of this topic. Memory aid: My very excellent mother just sent us nine pizzas. 2. Discuss the concept of "orbit". Establish that the nine planets orbit the sun in an anti-clockwise direction. (Clarify this term). Pupils watch a PowerPoint presentation. 3. Elicit through discussion that the time taken to orbit the sun depends on the distance from the Sun. Pupils complete Worksheet 32.
