Making Mosaics

Purpose:
The children become acquainted with geometrical forms and patterns in mosaics and Islamic art.
The children design their own mosaic.

 

Materials:

Paper
An empty wall to make the mosaic
Scissors
Glue

Introduction:
The teacher shows various examples of mosaics in Islamic buildings such as the Mosque in Isfahan (Iran) and the Alhambra (Spain). The teacher shows pictures of an artist making a mosaic for the Mosque in Isfahan.
The teacher discusses the question: what makes a mosaic a mosaic? Which geometrical forms can be recognised?

Main part:
The children design a basis form and pattern to use for a mosaic made by the whole class.
The children select one form and pattern as basis pattern for this mosaic.
The children design a mosaic.
The children cut the basis pattern in various colours.
The children make the mosaic on one wall of the classroom.

Conclusion:
Children of the other classes are invited to admire the mosaic. The children explain how they made it.
