Drawing circles with rulers

Skogsbackeskolan
Karlstad

Age:
10-12

Goals:
To make the pupils draw lines which finally gives them a circle in the middle, the radius is equal to the breadth of a ruler.

Materials:
Paper A4, pencil, ruler, crayons

Planning:
They get one paper A4 each.
Tell them to make a dot in the middle of the paper.
Put the ruler against the dot and draw a line across the paper.
To make the next line turn the ruler a little bit clockwise and continue to do like this until you have made the whole turn round.
Now you can start to colour the pattern as you wish.

Evaluation:
Once shown how to do it, it was no problem for them making this lovely pattern. The visual
result got more intensified when they coloured the pattern. They got very surprised when they saw the circle in the middle and couldn´t understand why.
