Studying and building three dimensional models

Skogsbackeskolan
Karlstad

Age:
10-11

Goals:
To teach the pupils that there are many properties at the same time such as length, breadth, height, surfaces, edges and corners.

Materials:
Yellow peas, toothpicks

Planning:
I collect a number of things with different shapes to a “form exhibition”.
We gather round the table and talk about the things, how they look like, and their shapes.
They have to describe the things using the correct words.
Now the children look for things in the classroom and we get together again and they have to describe the things they have found.
Now they are going to make models using the toothpicks and peas.
Their first model to create what kind of model they want but they should be able to describe it when they are ready.
Now they can test to build different forms using triangles only and the toothpicks have the same length.
After a while I can give them some drawings of different shapes so they could imitate.
We continue by making a cub, rectangular parallelepiped and prismes.
Then we make our exhibition.

Evaluation:
It was so fun to see them building all the things you can see in the pictures. They really used their imagination to create things. We talked about their buildings and tried to describe them
