The Eye Of The Square

Skogsbackeskolan
Karlstad

Age:
10-12 years old

Goals:
- to show that arithmetical proportion can be shown in many ways.
- to use the ruler properly.
- to show that from a square piece of paper using only a ruler the lines will curve

Materials:
A paper- square 20 cm x 20 cm.
A ruler
A pencil
Crayons
A pair of scissors

Planning:
Cut out a square 20 cm x 20 cm.
Number every centimetre, as shown in the picture from 1, 2, 3 etc.
Draw the lines between the numbers on the adjoining side, which gives the sum of 20. that is 1+19= 20, 2+18= 20 and continue like this until you have done the four sides of the square.
The visual effects are strengthening when you colour the pattern nicely.

Evaluation:
No difficulties in understanding the instruction and they got very surprised when they saw the eye coming up in the middle of the pattern.
Some of them wonder how straight lines can look like curves.
They also liked the picture when it was coloured in strong colours.
