The schoolIES "Pius Font i Quer" is a public school. We began our activities on Sep 1st 1978 in a provisional building of the City Hall. In 1980 the present building was inaugurated by the president of the "Generalitat de Catalunya", Josep Tarradellas.
From the start our main objective has been to provide the school with the facilities and services that best can complement the teaching task in order to offer a quality education. Everybody has contributed to make it a prestigious public school in central Catalonia. Where are we?Pius Font i Quer school is in Manresa, the capital of the Bages region. Our address is: Amadeu Vives Street s/n 08240 MANRESA. It is situated in a flat growing area of the town, near other schools, within easy reach and good communications. The school has interior yards and gardens.
StudiesThey are Obligatory Secondary Education (ESO), and Post-obligatory Secondary Education (ESPO, also known as "batxillerat"). The ESO stage covers four years, from the age of 12 to 16. The Curriculum Project organizes all credits common and variable in three weekly hours all along the stage, except for the Physical Education in the fourth year (two hours a week). We offer a wide and diversified range of variable credits, and they have been designed taking into account our students interests and possibilities. The instrumental subjects (mathematics, Catalan language, and Spanish) have a specific handling: we reduce the number of students per group and allow them to do these subjects along the school year in combination with variable credits of the same area. As for the ESPO studies - from the age of 16 to 18 - we offer three kinds of "batxillerat": Technological, Nature and Health Sciences, and Social Sciences and Humanities. The school diversifies each of the three batxillerats into different proposals according to the higher education studies that our students want to undertake, and so we offer four technological programmes or itineraries, two scientific-technical programmes, two nature and health programmes, one for economic studies, two for social sciences, and two for humanities.
ServicesThe Parents Association of our school offers a service of orientation and social assistance, provides the library service, and the school transport. The Department of Education provides a service of Psycho-pedagogy and Therapeutic Pedagogy. The regional council provides the lunch and transport services for the students living out of town. The school also has a bar.
FacilitiesOur students can make use of the Library, the Foreign Languages , Music, Art, and Computer departments, the Electronics and Mechanics workshops, and the Biology, Geology, Chemistry and Physics laboratories. Likewise, there are TV and video sets, and slides projectors in a proportion of one set every three classrooms. There is also a gymnasium and several sports grounds.
ProjectsDuring the school year 1997-98 the English department came into contact with Moston Brook High School, in Manchester. Along the year a group of Grade 9 students had chats with their English mates. Our school organized the 1st Telematic Week and our students and their parents had a chance to participate in a videoconference with the students and teachers of the English school. This year we will continue our contacts by means of chats, e-mails and snail mail. The students taking part in this exchanges will be of Grade A. Last year our department came into contact , via the ESP (European Schools Projects), with two schools in Slovakia. With thes schools our students will carry out three projects. With the school "Zakldna skola", in Kosice, the project will be "What do you Know about my Country?". In this project the students will ask each other questions on several issues about their own country. The exchanges will take place twice a month along the school year. The students taking part in this project will be of Grade B. With the school "Gymnazium Hlinska", in Zilina, we will carry out two projects. The first one is "Teenage Problem Page". In this project the students will send each other e-mails giving their opinions on teenagers' problems. The exchanges will be every month, and the students taking part in it will be of Grades C/D. The second project is "Legends from our Region". In this project the students will exchange popular legends from their own country. There will be a monthly exchange and it will also be for Grades C/D students.
