WHO WE ARE

The Victoria dels Angels School of Music is run by the Sant Cugat del Valles (Barcelona) Town Council and is licensed and partly financed by the Generalitat de Catalunya (autonomous Catalan Government).

We have about 600 students and 40 teachers. There is also a Parents' Association, which plays an active role in the School's activities.

The School was founded in 1977, but was officially inaugurated on the 14 th of April 1978. In 1992 we moved to our present building, and from then we have been sponsored by Victoria de los Angeles, the famous soprano, after whom the School is now named. The School's Silver Jubilee was celebrated on 26 th November 2003, and the great soprano attended this event. We paid her a warm tribute. As it turned out, this was her last public appearance.

WHERE WE ARE

The School is located in the Cultural Centre of Sant Cugat del Valles. Sant Cugat del Valles is over a thousand years old and is now a rapidly developing town near Barcelona, with a high quality of life. It is situated at the crossroads of three main roads; the Ap 7 Motorway, which connects the Mediterranean coast with France, the C58 from Barcelona to Terrassa and the C16 from Barcelona to Manresa via the Vallvidrera tunnel. WHAT WE DO

We offer both basic lessons and advanced preparation for those students who wish to follow professional music studies. Children start from 4 years old and we offer different options and levels in many different instruments.

We place great importance on collective work, both in musical language, which includes choir, and the Orff Orchestra, and in the different instrumental groups. We also teach the students how to follow the rhythm of music with their bodies through dance and movement, as well as teaching good posture for when they play their instruments.

Individual teaching normally starts at age eight. The amount of teaching depends on the level and instrument chosen.

At the preliminary level the teaching is about 1-2 hours per week, at elementary level it is 4-6 hours per week and at intermediate level, it is between 6 and 9 hours, depending on the course and specialism chosen.

The schedule as follows:

  • PRELIMINARY LEVEL: 4-7 years old
  • ELEMENTARY: 8-11 years old. There are also some groups for older children and adults
  • INTERMEDIATE LEVEL: 12- years old
  • INTERMEDIATE GRADE: 12- years old. This is equivalent to a professional “Conservatoire”. An entrance exam is needed for this level.

We provide tuition for the following instruments:

  • Recorder
  • Flute / Piccolo
  • Oboe
  • Clarinet
  • Basson
  • Saxophone
  • Horn
  • Trumpet
  • Trombone
  • Violin

AND FINALLY

We encourage relationships in the town and with other music schools through activities such as cultural exchanges, concerts and taking part in local events.

Our own teachers' interest in educational development has lead to our working together with the Music Department at Barcelona University on a research programme developing new methodologies for teaching music in the early years (REMIS PROJECT).

Our official language is Catalan.
