Four teachers joined the second general meeting organised by the project Comenius' parteners. After visiting Riga, the capital city, we went to Pope, Ventspils, where the school is placed. Pope is a small and scattered village in the north of the country, just a few kilometers from Ventspils, an industrial city by the Baltic sea. Pope, also the school name, is in a huge old building surrounded by fields and forests. Children from seven to sixteen study there. About ten students attend each classsroom. The music teacher welcame us together with a group of students of different ages, who danced, sang and played various instruments. They played traditional songs as well as songs from the associated countries (“En Jan Petit com balla”, from Catalonia). We were higly impressed both by their disciplined actitud and the high musical level exhibited. They also performed som folk dances helped by a group or women, among whom there were mothers, teachers or ex-teachers from the school. We were able to see some plastic work, made by the students, and inspired by music from the different participating countries ( we suggested a very beautiful piece from Frrederic Mompou, a catalan composer). We also watched a group of girls, who performed an exquisite choreography as they smartly moved around with some handmade well elaborated hats, made by themseves. One day we visited a nursery with children up to six. They greeted us with beautiful melodies and dances. The classrooms, the game corners, the little beds, the furniture ... every detail seemed to come from a fairy tale. The kids were quite shy, though they seemed to be relaxed. The whole school provoked a sensation of calm and peace. That contrasted with the atmosphere in the Turkish school that we had previously visited, where we could easily find 40 to 60 students per classroom. During the week we attended various meetings to discuss the work made by the schools this year. We also programmed some activities for the next one. Some of them are: We will increase the mail between students. The 3rd level will continue writing to Sweeden. The 4th to Romania The 5th to Turkey The 6th to Finland The will comunicate in English, but they will also exchange words and expressions in their own languages. We will listen to tales from the different countries in their original languages. We will learn traditional dances. We will organize an itinerant exposition with the works made by the students. Nowadays, this exposition is in Latvia and it will be in Barcelona next October. The third general partners meeting will take place in Barcelona. Nineteen teachers representing the different schools will visit us, as well as three students from the Ataturk school in Kahramaras. That will be from the 5th to the 11th of October, when we celebrate our Major School Feast. |
