Joaquim Mir


 

On the 6th January of 1873 he is born in Barcelona. He received lessons of painting and drawing in the Graner Academy. In 1893 he entered the Official School of Fine Arts,
but its his impulsive independent
character leads him to became autodidact. He was one of the members of a group of artists The Group of the Safrà or Saint Martí. He participated in different exhibitions like the General Exhibition of Fine Arts in Barcelona and afterwards in Madrid. This is his first known public appearance. In Madrid he knew the writer Pio Baroja and he attempts to obtain a grant in Rome but it wasn't possible. At the beginning of the Century he went to Mallorca with the Catalan writer and painter Santiago Rusinyol, he
decided to settle in the small town of Sa Calobra. Few years later, he moved to Tarragona, in Reus, for health motives. he painted there landscapes of different villages, Aleixar and Maspujols. In 1921, he married and instaled his home definitively in Villanova i la Geltrú.

Mir was essentially an autocton painter and, unlike his contemporaries, he didn't travel to Paris to complete his Knowledge as an artist.

His art evolutioned along years, from the luminous and testimonial naturalism of the Group of Salfrà to a personal style, based on a free and intuitive visio of the landscape, with the utilitation of stains and brushstrokes of color that approach the abstraction.

This Styleest style places Joaquim Mir in the forehead of
pictorical postmodernism in Catalonia. His work is an exaltation of the landscape, vehement and pasionate with surprising, spontaneous and magic colour.

Some national and international museums have his paintings, they give
sample of boasts this Catala painter, one of the most relevant of 20th Century.
