WINTER BONFIRES IN THE MARTIN RIVER CULTURAL PARK

Saint Anthony's and Saint Sebastian bonfires

We celebrated Saint Anthony's bonfires in most of our villages. St. Anthony is the 17th of January, is the animals' saint. Nowadays during the bonfires people barbecue lamb chops, pig face, and chorizos (pork sausages). As well St. Anthony's bonfires, there are also Saint Sebastian's, which is celebrated the 20th of January.

Micael (oral text)

There are big bonfires where thick logs burn. By the time, there are lots of hot coals you can barbecue bacon and different kinds of thin salamis: chorizos (praprika sausages), blood sausages. Afterwards, tickets are sold for the raffle of a pig in the church square. There is music and some people play the drum. In the morning of St. Anthony's day chocolate custard is given. Also, the festival organizers bring a big casserole of chocolate custard to our school, so that we can all have some. Later on, dogs and some other animals are taken to church to be blessed.

Saint Anthony's and Saint Sebastian bonfires are very important to bring people together and to make a big festival. We eat chorizos (praprika sausages), bacon, bread and black olives. I like bonfires very much.
