VISIT
TO THE COAL POWER STATION
|
On Wednesday February the 4th, we visited the Coal Power Station. We had
to catch a bus, as it is 8Km from Andorra. When we got there, Ventura and
Enrique were waiting for us. They work for ENDESA, this the Company's name
that owns the power station. We went into the assembly hall and they explained
us lots of things. The Power Station has been working since 1980 and employs
almost 500 people from Andorra and surrounding villages.Vanesa Ruiz, Oscar,

We
were shown the station plans and also we were explained how burning coal
produces electricity.1st. Coal is carried on trucks from the mines to
the Power Station.2nd. Conveyer belts take coal to the mills to grind
it down; then it goes to the boiler where it burns.3rd. The released heat
makes water hot, until it becomes steam, which then moves a turbine that
eventually produces electricity.4th. Electricity comes out through cables
so that it can reach factories and houses. Marta and Monica.

There
were some helmets in a box, and we put them on. After that we climbed
lots of stairs and visited the Controls Room. In the Controls Room there
where many buttons to make the whole Station work. I think that working
here must be rather complicated. After that we went inside the Machine
Room to see the motors and the turbines. There are three huge turbines.Oscar

Later
on, we went outside to see the three Cooling Towers, which are 107 meters
high; we saw how acidic water poured down, and if someone were to touch
it, he would burn his hands. There is also a tall chimney that is 343
meters high, it is taller than the Eiffel tower in Paris; smokes comes
out of it and contaminates the air. Oscar

We
saw how the coal mills were spinning quite fast, so that they could grind
the coal down. Later we went to another place where they make chalk. Finally
we went to some sort of hall to leave the helmets in a box. After that,
we got on to the bus to return to our School. Once we got there, we got
on to our own minibus to go home. Mónica and Oscar

What we liked most was to see water pouring down the Cooling Towers and
we especially liked putting helmets on our heads. Travelling on the bus
all of us together was very nice. Gregorio, Juan y Carlos. |
Everything was very big. I was very impressed by the high chimney. There
was noise everywhere. In my opinion everything was very interesting. I enjoyed
the visit to the Power Station because it was inmense. Vanesa Ruiz y Marta.
