OUR TRIP TO ALWEN EDUCATION CENTRE
On the 22nd of March we went on a visit to the Alwen Environmental Education Centre. We were going to find out all about water.

We were welcomed by Peter Dane and began the day by watching a video called 'Buckets of water'. It was about a girl called Christina who lived in Ghana. Her life was very different to ours and getting water was difficult.
Next we went outside and measured the distance she had to walk to get water, it was ten metres! We timed ourselves walking this distance with heavy rocks in our buckets. It was hard. We also had a lot of fun trying to carry a bucket on our heads, it was very tricky!

After lunch we did an experiment and learnt how water is purified. We used dirty water and poured it into a bottle through a layer of cotton wool, sand, gravel and netting. When the water came through it was much cleaner! Alum and lime would be added next to clean it properly.
Before walking around the Alwen Cleaning plant we were given a safety talk and warned of the dangers! Only nine people worked there, programmed computers did the rest! We had a very interesting day and learnt a lot!
