This is the little train that took the slate to the port at Porthmadog. Porthmadog is about twenty miles away and the train took it here so that the slate could be shipped all over the world. Many thought, and still think that this is the best slate in the world. |
This is a miners cottage . We went inside and it was very small. It had three rooms, a kitchen, front room and a small bedroom. This cottage was owned by a very famous harp player who used to play the harp for the miners. His name was David Davies. Can you see the slate roof? |

Here are some pictures of old things that we found in the cottage. The top picture is of a mangle. The mangle was used to dry clothes by squeezing them very tight. |
The second picture is of a churn to make butter. The women used to make butter to sell at the market. They would put in the milk and turn it over and over until it made butter. |

Here is the slate all stacked up ready to be taken away to be used as roof tiles. We enjoyed our day at Llechwedd mines very much and we learnt a lot about this special industry of our area. Llechwedd mines are in Bleanau Ffestiniog in Gwynedd, North Wales if you ever want to visit. |
