BUTTERFLIES OF THE GREAT ORME AND SNOWDONIA

This is the Silver Studded Blue butterfly that lives on the Great Orme. In June there are thousands of them. This sub-species is unique to the Great Orme in Llandudno.

The Dark Green Fritillary is also a are butterfly in Wales, but it can be seen on the limestone pavements of the Great Orme in late spring. They are also far smaller than their relatives in other parts of the country and are recognised as being a definite sub-species or race.

The Grayling is not quite as beautiful as the other butterflies on the Great Orme, but it is just as rare. They have adapted to life on the headland by appearing much earlier in the year in order to feed on the tiny limestone flowers and grasses.

The Peacock Butterfly is very common and can be seen all over Snowdonia. They especially like our school gardens and feed on the Budlea flowers.
The Brimstone is lovely to see because it is completely yellow. We have seen it on our nature club visits to Conwy RSPB Nature Reserve.
