DANCE: "JO EN VAIG I EN VINC"

When is the dance performed?

It is the dance that people typically dance in Martinet on the last Thursday of Carnival (Dijous Gras). Some years ago, it was also danced in other neighbouring towns, but now it is only performed in Martinet.
In the morning, people go throughout the town collecting eggs and botifarres (Catalan sausages) accompanied by a musician; at lunchtime, lunch is cooked and in the evening the dance called "Jo en vaig i en vinc" is performed.
It is a variant of the Catalan dance called "Ballet de Deu".

How is it performed?

The dance is performed in pairs that go round the room three times holding hands. The boy hides his free hand behind his back and the girl holds her skirt with hers.
The dance simultaneously combines comings and goings with in and out movements; that is to say, the pair seem to open and close to the sound of the music.
In the last round they let go of their hands.
Finally, they all form a circle together.

What do they wear?

Some years ago, for this occasion, children wore their newest clothes, that they usually bought specially for the ocassion. However, nowadays the use of Catalan regional costumes is being introduced.
