Parla la Mort: Hi havia un mercader a Bagdad que va enviar el seu criat a comprar provisions al mercat; al cap de molt poca estona, el criat va tornar tot blanc i tremolós, i va dir: “Senyor, tot just quan he arribat a la plaça del mercat una dona m’ha donat una empenta enmig de la multitud, i quan m’he tombat, he vist que l’empenta me l’havia donada la mort, que m’ha mirat i m’ha fet un gest amenaçador. Així que ara, si us plau, deixeu-me el vostre cavall per fugir de la ciutat i escapar-me del meu destí. Aniré a Samarra i allà la Mort no em podrà trobar”. El mercader li va deixar el cavall. El criat hi va muntar, va clavar-li els esperons i va marxar tan ràpid com el cavall era capaç de galopar. Llavors el mercader va venir fins al mercat i em va veure enmig de la gentada, i acostant-se fins on era jo, va demanar-me: “¿Per què has fet un gest d’amenaça al meu criat quan l’has vist aquest matí?” “No era cap gest d’amenaça –vaig dir-li-, era només l’efecte de la sorpresa. M’he quedat parada de veure’l a Bagdad, perquè tinc una cita amb ell aquesta nit a Samarra”.

Death speaks: There was a merchant in Baghdad who sent his servant to market to buy provisions and in a little while the servant came back, white and trembling, and said, Master, just now when I was in the market-place I was jostled by a woman in the crowd and when I turned I saw it was Death that jostled me. She looked at me and made a threatening gesture; now, lend me your horse, and I will ride away from this city and avoid my fate. I will go to Samarra and there death will not find me. The merchant lent him his horse, and the servant mounted it, and he dug his spurs in its flanks and as fast as the horse could gallop he went. Then the merchant went down to the marketplace and he saw me standing in the crowd and he came to me and said, Why did you make a threatening gesture to my servant when you saw him this morning? That was not a threatening gesture, I said, it was only a start of surprise. I was astonished to see him in Baghdad, for I had an appointment with him tonight in Samarra.
