1.   Introduction letter

To the attention of  Natural Science teachers of

High / Secondary School

Wednesday, 27th June  2001

Dear Colleagues,

We send you an initial scheme of a working project that can deal with pupils between 12-18 year old that study Natural Science at your school. The title of the report is "From Europe to Africa: The natural corridors" .

As a whole we can say that making biomes found all through the migration routes every year. If everything goes well, students from the different countries all through the migration routes, Finland-South-Africa, could participate in this project.

We hope this project will contribute to the understanding and fondness and interest in some aspects of our natural heritage, and it will also help pupils to acquire habits of observation and reflection about environment, so it can become part of their daily culture.

Also, this project includes different qüestionaries about scientific actuality news, with the aim that students could to analyse and give their personal opinion about them.

The results of pupils tasks will be edited in our polyglot magazine, called Be In, that is published on our centre WEB page through project "Orator".

In case you are interested in taking part in the project, please let us know it as soon as possible before September-October 2001. The reason is that we bear in mind to run the project over from September-October 2001 onwards, since the results of this work will participate in the Universal Forum of Cultures, Barcelona 2004. Looking forward to hearing from you soon.

   Yours truly,

                                                                                              Mª Jesús Escudé-Cofiner

ENVIRONMENTAL TRIAL

General aims:

. Promoting communication and cultural exchange among teenagers from different countries.

. Acquiring the habit of watching and reflection about environment.

. Learning to measure diversity from their knowledge.

. Being conscious about the fact that human beings are part of biosphere, as well as possible impacts of their acts on the environment-

. Acquiring the habit of getting constant information about science development and progress.

. Knowing all the different methods, channels that nowadays young people can have and work on easily, about scientific information (Books, magazines, films, CD, Internet, etc.).

. Developing the use of new technologies.

. Making reports, either written, visual or audio-visual about all the tasks done in the classroom.

INITIAL AIMS OF THE PROJECT

  Subject: Environment

. Studying the different cycle changes (Blooming, Scattering seeds, migrations, etc.) that you can find in the different living beings (species) in our country during the year.

Those changes can be contrasted with the different environmental conditions (temperature, rain, etc.) during the year, with the aim of valuing the possible connection (link) between the different cycle changes and environmental conditions.

. Comparative study of natural biomes from Finland to South-Africa, according to migratory routes of birds. It will also be studied the environmental conditions in each layer (area) they spend a time.

. Analyses of the geological history of all the places  where the birds stay. This study will be carried out though observation of rocks, geological structures and relieves of the different areas .

. Evolution of the different uses of ground  all through the geological history of each country.Nowadays uses of soil.

. Forecast owing to sustained development.

Subject: Scientific news

. Analyses of scientific articles published in different languages. (Books, magazines, newspapers, Internet, etc.)

. Contrasting opinions about new scientific news among pupils from different countries.

. Achievement of pupils implication into the problems dealing with citizen’s health.

WORKING METHOD

 1)      Information about the different typical biomes that students of each country, following general guides , the same for all pupils. But this questionnaire can be changed according to teachers' suggestions.

We are sending you a summary of these guides (schemes, questionnaires) in order to help you get a general idea of which tasks the pupils should work on:

            . Information

            . Watching fields

            . Drawings and pictures

. Making questionnaires that force you to reflect on the subjects treated

            . Interpreting maps

            . Comparing obtained data

            . Drawing conclusions.

 2)      The target language will be English, as well as the information sent .But during the lessons you could use  the native language.

 3) The tasks done by pupils in each country will be sent through e-mail to all countries interested and those that are working on the project. In this way each centre will be able to get information about:

3.1 Environmental conditions and structural and functional adaptations in all those      ecosystems:

-         Tundra

-         Taiga

-         Deciduous tree forest

-         Steppe

-         Mediterranean holm-oak forest

-         Maquis

-         Desert

-         Tropical jungle

3.2 Giving opinions about scientific news from students of different countries and how this news affects directly or indirectly the life of all citizens.

 4) These tasks reports will be published twice a year in the polyglot magazine edited on the Centre Web page through Orator Project.
