BRIDGES IN SPAIN

The bridges are very important because there are lots of rivers in Spain and   we can cross them. The bridges are also importants for the pilgrims because they have to walk lots of km and cross many rivers to arrive to a sacred place in Santiago de Compostela. It’s very important for themselves to arrive there and without the bridges they can’t cross the rivers. 

QUEEN BRIDGE

Also called Garex: It is in the county of Navarrese, judicial party of Pamplona.

In the Middle Ages the population called it indistinctly  Arga Bridge and Queen Bridge. It was built by the Navarrese Queen to facilitate the pilgrimages the way to Santiago because in this point were joined the two routes of pilgrims which came from France. It was built in the XI century.

 

LEDESMA BRIDGE

 LEDESMA BRIDGE: Some authors place it in the Romanic period because it  already appears mentioned in a document of the XV century. It is made by nine medieval arches and it crosses the river Ulla between Gres and Ledesma. It seems that it belonged to the old real road that joined  Lugo with Santiago.

It belongs to the city council of Vila of Cruces

PONTEPEDRA

The Gothic bridge, with an interesting cruise and the adjacent mills which form a beautiful group. It is over the reservoir of  Dorna. In spite of the overgrowth that almost hides their three ogival arches, the bridge is still witness of  the water of the river Lérez.

It belongs to the city council of Cerdedo.

 

BORELA BRIDGE

This old Medieval bridge over the river Almofrei was repaired so that it could support the traffic of the vehicles that circulate between Puente Bora and Carballedo. It is formed by a pointed arch and it preserves the railing and many of its original stone.

It belongs to the city council of Cotobade.

MAPLE BRIDGE

 Maple bridge, over the river Pas (Cantabria), also bad called Roman Bridge, it is the work of civil engineering more relevant. It was declared Cultural Interest Good. It is a stone bridge shaped of ass loin that was lifted since 1.585 under the direction of the Liérganes stonemason teacher, Don Bartolomé of Beautiful. It shows five arches of different sizes.

When the river Pas went down with enormous water floods, it dragged the bridge knocking down it partly or whole.  It was repaired again but not in a very resistant way .
