Feudal Europe

FIND OUT WHO WAS WHO IN THE MIDDLE AGES
During the Middle Ages, society was organized into a feudal system, which was based on land giving in return for services. The king gave lands - or fiefs- to his vassals, his most important noblemen and in return, each promised to give the king part of the wealth and some soldiers in wartime.
People believed at that time that the hierarchy of men was ordered by God. So, the place one person occupied in society was stated by birth.
The King: His power was believed to come from God directly. But few kings were wealthy enough to keep an army and so, they depended on their barons, who provided them with knights and soldiers.
Barons: Next in rank to the king, were the barons, including a big amount of EARLS. They were the most powerful and wealthy noblemen, who received their fiefs directly from the king and controlled huge armies of knights loyal to their lord and the king.
Bishops: They had as much power as the barons. They ruled over areas called dioceses, with all the priests and monasteries in them. They were extremely wealthy due to the collection of tithes and other taxes from their dioceses.
Noblemen: They ruled over fiefs or manors, renting most of their land to the peasants whom worked for them. They used to be the warriors of feudal society, as they had trained to be knights. But, as knights, they had paid oath of fidelity to serve the great nobles who had granted them with their lads.
The Peasants: Countrymen were at the bottom of the social tree, as they had few rights and were forced to work the land of their lord to provide food for everyone else. We must distinguish between SERFS AND VILLAINS. The first couldn't leave the manor where they had been born, while the second ones could. However, they both had to work the lord's lands and had to fight in their lord's army in wartime.
