Extra Information: TABLE MANNERS

|

|
Dining at the Great Hall in the castle was a ritual and a pleasure, involving elaborate preparation by the servants. However, intimate eating habits required the observance of strict good manners:
- One had to sit where the host indicated. The lord of the manor and his closest companions and members of his family sat at the high table.
- Nobody could sit opposite a woman, but one could sit next to her.
- In polite society, it was usual to wash ceremoniously before and after each meal.
- Tables were covered with white, linen cloths.
- Everybody was supposed to eat a lot, so before sitting at the table, you should slacken your belt.
- At the table, one had to look at the table at all times while eating.
- You could drink a lot of wine and beer, as it was a good sign of education.
- Thick, square-cut slices of bread called trenchers were used instead of plates, but you weren't supposed to eat them. They were usually collected and distributed as alms to the poor. Only the peasants were allowed to eat them.
- Forks didn't exist, only knives and spoons were used at the table. A young nobleman used to carve the meat, but the guests used their fingers to eat. Forks weren't in general use until the 17th century.
- Nobody should ever dip dirty fingernails into a shared trencher.
- Nobody could talk with his mouth full or drink from a shared cup with greasy lips.
- If there was a priest, one had to be careful where to spit. If you needed to spit, you should separate your legs and spit under the table politely. You were supposed to do the same if you ate cherries, to spit the stone.
- If one had to sneeze, you were supposed to cover your nose with your handkerchief or your clothes.
- If you had bad breath, you couldn't speak or belch near anybody's face.
- As salt was a rare species, there was a custom related to that: Rich people sat above the salt, while poor people sat below the salt.

Homework
