Who Made My Trainers? How To Be A Responsible Consumer

PROCESS & RESOURCES - 7
Optional Follow-Up Tasks

Here are some things you could do to follow up your research and report. Why not…

  • write a letter of protest?
  • have a debate?

A letter of protest:
You could write to one of the multinational companies and tell them -

  • why you won’t buy their product, or
  • why you are pleased that they have responded to criticism

For ideas for how to write the letter, have a look at this site.

A debate:
You could set up a debate or panel discussion between the different points of view. For example, different students could represent:

  • the manufacturers of a product (e.g. Cocacola, MacDonalds, Gap, IKEA…)
  • the marketing people
  • consumers
  • ecologists
  • human rights activists
  • anti-globalization activists

You will also need to appoint a chairperson.

Each group prepares its arguments and then the chairperson “chairs” the debate by asking each group to present their point of view. Once each group has presented its point of view, a general discussion can follow. The students who are watching the debate can then vote on who they think presented the most convincing argument. (If you have a video camera, you could pretend you are a TV studio and video the debate).

When you have finished, use the arrow (->) below to continue to the self-evaluation stage...
