English through science IES Frederic Mompou, Sant Vicenç dels Hort.s. Joan Alberich i Carramiñana

LESSON PLAN 5

Aim: To assess the power points of lesson 2; to introduce the pH scale

Teaching objectives

Content

  • The pH scale

Communication

  • Oral presentation

Cognition

  • Evaluating oral presentations
  • Describing a natural phenomenon (strength of acids and alkalis)
  • Understanding numerical data (concerning pH scale)

Culture

  • Uses and problems of acids and alkalis around the world

Outcomes

At the end of the lesson, students will be able to

  • know how to assess an oral presentation
  • be conscious of how an oral presentation has to be done
  • recognise the importance of presenting results to an audience in science
  • speak in front of an audience about a scientific topic
  • carry out a small research project about a scientific issue
  • develop a sense of awareness of global scientific problems around the world
  • know how to extract information from a presentation and how to ask questions on it
  • use technical instruments (computer, screen, power-point) to make an oral presentation
  • work as a team when giving oral presentations
  • understand at a basic level the pH scale and its use to measure the strength of acids and alkalis
  • extract information from a table and apply it to solve a problem
  • remember the names of some indicators and their range to measure pH
  • know that acids and alkalis have different pH numbers and their colours on different indicators

Tasks planned and timing

  • Students will be informed how the class will be developed. They will be given a sheet to assess their partners and will be told how to fill it in (5 min)
  • Students will perform a role-play, from the perspective of one of these different countries (USA, Brazil, China, Russia, Nigeria, Germany and Catalonia) and as experts in that country about acids and alkalis. A small power point will be shown to put them into context. Each team will give their oral presentation in front of the class, 4 minutes for each presentation, 1 min for questions (40 min)
  • Meanwhile, the rest of the students will assess their partners. At the end of the presentation, the teacher will ask a question to the team on stage, about their presentation
  • After this previous activity is finished, the teacher will introduce the pH scale with an explanation on the blackboard. Students will be asked to do an exercise about it (15 min)
  • Homework: students will be given an exercise about the pH scale. This will be a problem which will be solved by extracting data from a table.

Resources

  • For the power-point: a computer, a screen and a projector
  • For the assessment of the oral presentation: a grid for each student
  • For the introduction of the pH scale: a handout with exercises for each student
  • For the homework: one photocopy for each student

Assessment

  • The rest of the class will assess each oral presentation
  • The answer to the question at the end of the presentation will also be marked
