LESSON PLAN 1. Classification of materials

Aim: Students will realise that objects are made of different materials and will learn in which groups are materials classified.

Teaching objectives

  • General classification of materials. C1-C2
  • Definition of metal, ferrous metal and no-ferrous metal. C1-C2
  • Basic knowledge about polymers, timbers, ceramics and composites. C2-C3
  • Basic chronology about materials. C1-C4

Learning outcomes

  • Knowing the name of the majority of objects and of the materials and its translation into L1. C1-C2
  • Identifying materials in real life objects.C3
  • Classifying objects depending on the material they are made of.C3
  • Comparison between materials.C2-C3

Activities

  1. The teacher gives the students a handout with pictures of different objects (known by the students) with the question: What are the following objects made from? The students work it out (there is not an only answer for every object) and translate the names into L1.
  2. The students must write sentences with the following structure:

A (screwdriver) is made from (metal and plastic) or (metal and wood)

  1. Students must choose objects from the classroom and decide what are they made from, following this structure:

A (table)is made of (wood,metal and plastic)

  1. The teacher gives the students a text about materials and another text with missing words. The students must fill the gaps.
  2. Students have to write an example of every type of material provided a diagram

All the activities of this lesson will be made in pairs. After every activity the results will be checked with the rest of the class in plenary.

Resources

The students will have a handout with the printout of the power point presentation explained by the teacher.

Evaluation

  • While they are working in pairs the teacher will evaluate their work walking around the class.
  • When results are checked with the plenary the teacher will see how they have been working.
  • At the end of the lesson the teacher will think about what worked well and what didn’t.
