Materials IES Cassà de la Selva Josep Poch Clarà

LESSON PLAN 3. Other properties of industrial materials

Aim: The aim of the lesson is to introduce the different mechanical properties through slides and familiarise learners with them, as well as practising the vocabulary and structures related with the topic. The students will work out some analytic problems about thermal expansion

Teaching objectives

  • General view of the explained properties. C1-C2
  • Definition of thermal properties, electromagnetic properties, density, transparency and fusibility (and other properties derived from them). C1-C2
  • Along with the nouns, the related adjective will be also taught as well as the definition and with the support of a visual element. C2-C3

Learning outcomes

  • Knowing the name of the properties mentioned above and its translation into L1. C1-C2
  • Identifying such properties in real life objects. C3
  • Classifying the studied properties in several practical cases. C3
  • Being able so solve analytic problems. C2

Activities

Task 1 to 4

The students will solve the problems individually. Afterwards the exercises will be corrected on the board in front of all them and will be commented

Task 5

Exercise using a substitution list to practise some definitions learnt

Task 6

The students must think about expansion joints in rail tracks and their importance

Task 7

Exercise about electromagnetism through a daily life example

Task 8

The students must understand a chart and compare several materials according to their densities

Task 9

Exercise using a substitution list to practise some definitions learnt

Resources

The students will have a handout with the printout of the power point presentation explained by the teacher.

Evaluation

  • While they are working in pairs the teacher will evaluate their work walking around the class.
  • When results are checked with the plenary the teacher will see how they have been working.
  • At the end of the lesson the teacher will think about what worked well and what didn’t.
