LESSON PLAN 4. Metals and alloys
Aim: The aim of the lesson is to introduce the concepts of metal and alloy through slides and familiarise learners with them, as well as practising the vocabulary and structures related with the topic. The students will work on charts and graphs related with the topic
Teaching objectives
- General view of metal and alloy. C1-C2
- Definition of metal, alloy, solid solution, intermetallic compound, cooling curve, phase diagram, melting point. C1-C2
- Along with the nouns, the related adjective will be also taught as well as the definition and with the support of a visual element. C2-C3
- Use of graphs as a useful tool in engineering. C1-C2-C3
Learning outcomes
- Knowing the vocabulary mentioned above and its translation into L1. C1-C2
- Understanding graphs. C3
- Classifying the studied alloys depending on their related graphs or their structure. C3
Activities
Task 1
The students will fill the gaps of a text after having read a list of properties of metals
Task 2
Learners must work out the state of an alloy knowing some data and using the diagram
Task 3
Interpretation of a diagram and having attention to some specific points
Task 4
Learners must understand a diagram and fill the gaps of a text
Task 5
The students must write sentences from a given substitution list (about the studied diagrams)
Resources
The students will have a handout with the printout of the power point presentation explained by the teacher.
Evaluation
- While they are working in pairs the teacher will evaluate their work walking around the class.
- When results are checked with the plenary the teacher will see how they have been working.
- At the end of the lesson the teacher will think about what worked well and what didn’t.
