LESSON PLAN 5. Iron and ferrous metals
Aim: The aim of the lesson is to introduce the concepts of iron, its ores and steelmakin through slides and familiarise learners with them, as well as practising the vocabulary and structures related with the topic.
Teaching objectives
- General view of iron and alloy. C1-C2
- Definition of iron and the basic contents of steelmaking through the blast furnace process. C1-C2
- Along with the new terms there will be the support of a visual element. C2-C3
- Use of graphs. C1-C2-C3
- Overview of blacksmiths and iron throughout history. C4

- Getting to know the vocabulary taught in class and its translation into L1. C1-C2
- Understanding steelmaking through its different steps. C1-C2
- Being aware of the historical importance of iron and blacksmiths.C4
- Knowing the main ores of iron. C1-C2

- Description of the chemical process in a blast furnace
Activities (to be done in group except task 3 that could be done individually):
Task 1
The students will fill the gaps of a text about iron ores
Task 2
Learners must match up two columns of statements about iron and ferrous metals
Task 3
Interpretation of a diagram and having attention to some specific points
Task 4
Learners must match up two columns of statements about steelmaking
Task 5
The students must analyse the chemical reactions in a blast furnace finding out the origin of every reactive substance
Task 6
The students must find out who were the ancient gods of the forge
Task 7
True/false activity and rewriting of the false statements
Resources
The students will have a handout with the printout of the power point presentation explained by the teacher.
Evaluation
- While they are working in pairs the teacher will evaluate their work walking around the class.
- When results are checked with the plenary the teacher will see how they have been working.
- At the end of the lesson the teacher will think about what worked well and what didn’t.
