LESSON PLAN 6. Steel processes and products

Aim: The aim of the lesson is to introduce the concepts of commercial types of steel, their compositions and uses as well as the products made from them through slides and familiarise learners with them, as well as practising the vocabulary and structures related with the topic.

Teaching objectives

  • General view of types of steels. C1-C2
  • General view of types of products. C1-C2
  • Definition of heat treatments and their purposes. C1-C2
  • Along with the new terms there will be the support of a visual element. C2-C3
  • Heat treatments in the past. C4

Learning outcomes

  • Getting to know the vocabulary taught in class and its translation into L1. C1-C2
  • Understanding the purpose of different kinds of steel. C1-C2
  • Understanding the purpose of different products of steel. C1-C2
  • Knowing several parts of a car made from steel. C1-C2-C4
  • Being aware of the historical importance of heat treatments. C1-C2-C4

Activities (to be done in group except task 3 that could be done individually):

Task 1

The students will fill the gaps of a text

Task 2

Uses of stainless steel

Task 3

The students decide which kind of steel is better for some examples given and must explain why

Task 4

Learners must read a text about the heat treatment of steel in ancient times and work out which treatment is it

Task 5

The students will learn the vocabulary of some parts of the car through the use of steel in them

Resources

The students will have a handout with the printout of the power point presentation explained by the teacher.

Evaluation

  • While they are working in pairs the teacher will evaluate their work walking around the class.
  • When results are checked with the plenary the teacher will see how they have been working.
  • At the end of the lesson the teacher will think about what worked well and what didn’t.
