LESSON PLAN 8. Copper

Aim: The aim of the lesson is to introduce the concepts of copper, its commercial uses as well as the main alloys made from it through slides and familiarise learners with them, as well as practising the vocabulary and structures related with the topic.

Teaching objectives

  • General view of copper. C1-C2
  • General view history of copper and its importance as the first metal produced by mankind. C1-C2
  • Modern industrial production of copper, description of its parts. C1-C2
  • Copper applications. C1-C2-C4
  • Alloys of copper and their uses (traditional and modern). C4- C1-C2

  • Getting to know the vocabulary taught in class and its translation into L1. C1-C2
  • Understanding the importance of copper. C1-C2
  • Understanding the purpose of different parts of the copper making process. C1-C2
  • Being aware of the importance of copper throughout history. C1-C2-C4
  • Being aware of the historical importance of copper alloys (specially bronze). C1-C2-C4

Activities (to be done in group except task 2 that could be done individually):

Task 1

The students will fill a chart True / False questions about copper

Task 2

The students will match up two lists with statements about copper

Task 3

The students will name applications of copper through given pictures

Task 4

Learners will fill the gaps in a text about copper alloys

Resources

The students will have a handout with the printout of the power point presentation explained by the teacher.

Evaluation

  • While they are working in pairs the teacher will evaluate their work walking around the class.
  • When results are checked with the plenary the teacher will see how they have been working.
  • At the end of the lesson the teacher will think about what worked well and what didn’t.
