The initial evaluation outlined in this dossier consists of an assessment of knowledge of musical language and command of written music. This objective test will enable us to determine which procedures and concepts the pupils already have a command of and which need to be worked on for lack of knowledge or because they are as yet insufficiently assimilated. Clearly, depending on the results of this test, the activities to be undertaken will need to be revised.
The formative evaluation will consist of a test to enable us to find out the degree of assimilation of the new subject matter being worked on. To carry out the evaluation we will make use of exercises which may be quite similar to those outlined in the learning activities. In the same vein pupils' work will be constantly revised producing a continuation of their activities saved on disk or copied into their notebooks.
As a summative evaluation we propose a piece of groupwork: the composition of a musical work in which all elements dealt with throughout the material appear. This activitiy will enable us to test to what degree the objectives of the dossier have been absorbed on the part of the pupils. By way of example a "Suite" of several movements could be created where forms might appear: binaries, ternaries, variations..., monodic and polyphonic textures.... Each group of two or three children should create one movement for the "Suite".
