ACTIVITY 9:
AND THEN THERE WERE THREE

  1. Retrieve these files: NOIMARE, CUCU, ZEGMOEDE, PERASTOU, ZIMZIM and GREENSLE. Notice that some notes have a dot at the side. Look in the program to find out how this symbol appears.

Music Using the program "Music": Press the . key (full stop) to obtain the dot.

El noi de la mare (Catalonia)

    Cucú (Popular)

Zeg Moeder, waar is Jan? (The Netherlands)

    Péra stous péra kámpous (Greece)

    Zim, zim! (Italy)

    Greenslaves (United Kingdom)

Listen to them and see how the dot changes the value of the notes.

Change the value of all the dotted notes to legato. To do this, place the cursor on the note, remove the dot and duplicate the note, then tie it to the next one. Move the cursor forward and modify the value of the second note.

Music Using the program "Music": To do this place the cursor on the note and remove the dot (key .), duplicate the note (Insert), tie it to the next one (key L for legato), move the cursor forwards and modify the value of the second note with the key - (minus sign).

The equivalents you should obtain are:

Listen to them again. Have you noticed any difference? Deduce the effects of the dot and ligature.

  2. Write this piece into the computer and play it. Note as you write it in that there are problems with the notes in some bars - the program tells you there are errors. To correct them write triplets in where you find three eighth notes together. Listen to it once more and try to explain the effect of the dot.

Music Using the program "Music": Note that broken lines appear in some bars where there are errors. To correct them write in triplets (key 3) where you find three eighths together (you need to write a 3 on every note in the triplets).

    Polka (United Kingdom)

In this Dutch song (file INHOLLAN) there are no bar errors, but it still needs triplets to make it sound alright. Do you know where they should go?

In Holland Staat een huis (The Netherlands)

  3. Load the piece BEGIN. Listen to it, noting the triplets, tied notes and dots. Copy all the different combinations you find into your notebook along with their equivalents.

    Example:

  4. This is the melodic line from the song Una plata d'enciam which you will find in the file ENCIAM1. Listen to it and find the correct values for the notes, using eighths, quarters and three eighth note triplets.

  5. This is the melody from the theme tune to the film Star Wars which you will find under the file name of GUERRA. Write down the rhythm bearing in mind that there is a dotted eighth and a sixteenth note, and three eighth note triplets. The other notes are halves and quarters.

    Stars Wars

  6. In this melody from Peer Gynt there are five bars, when in reality there should only be four. Load the file PEERGYNT. Rewrite it using eighth note triplets.

    Peer Gynt (E. Grieg)
