TheButtermilkbridge in Ghent
During the eighteenth century a ghost appeared on a bridge every single midnight on the stroke of twelve. She cried:" Buttermilk, buttermilk, buttermilk. I've lost my poor soul, because I've measured more water than milk." and disappeared.
It was told that it was a milkwoman's ghost. The milkwoman used to cheat on people by selling them poor milk: it contained too much water. But her bad conscience caused her to pay the evil she had done and she committed suicide by jumping off the bridge. Her ghost was restless and asked for forgiveness to the people she had deceived. Eventually the people forgave her and even prayed for the milkwoman's ghost. The prayers were heard and her soul was accepted in heaven.
Now the bridge is still called the Buttermilkbridge.
