Gerard de Duivel

In Ghent their lived a man , who was known as Gerard ( The devil ). Everybody knew he had kicked his wife to death and that he had a good deal on his slate. That's how he obtained his nickname. His son also named Gerard , was a chip of the old block. Like father, like son, they fell in love with the same woman. They were so evil-minded that they plotted against each other, torn by jealousy. But the oldest 'devil' was the smartest one. He convinced his son that he had given up his wedding plans while his son was to be married. He wanted to and rest in the 'land van Waas' (rural area in East-Flanders). His son was pleasantly surprised. But evil as he was,he did not show and said:"That seems to be the best for both of us."

He took the old man no trouble to find two shippers who were willing to do anything for a couple of silver coins. He sent them to the upper-room of the 'Red Tower' and said to them:"At midnight a man will come up here, and ask your two, if everything is alright, then you'll strangle him, put him in a bag and drop him into the water". That is all the shippers needed to know. That night Gerard said to his son: "I've rented a boat at Pasburg, cause I intend to leave at midnight. It's better that I go unseen, but I'll need your help with that. You must go to the Red Tower and ask if everything is alright.

On his way, the son got suspicious. He knew how cunning his father was and decided to wait and see which way the cat was going to jump.

After a while the old "devil" couldn't stand his impatience. He wanted to know if his hench - men had succeeded! When he entered the upper - room of the Red Tower, the hench - men strangled him, put him into a bag and dropped him into the water. The young " Devil" stood around the corner and saw how the bag plunged into the Leie ( river ). He grined and wandered through the dark streets.

The next day he started the preparations for his wedding.
