Saint George's Day

 

 

One of the most popular traditions in Catalonia is St.George's day. On this day men give women a rose and women give them a book in commemoration of the mythical legend of St.George.

"All started in a small village called Montblanc, were a fierce dragon lived. The inhabitants were afraid because of the beast and they were forced to renounce to their own harvest and fields.

The hungry beast ate more and more and one day, when the food was finished, the population of the village decided to do a raffle among the ladies and the one who would be unlucky to be chosen, would be given to the dragon as a sacrifice.

One day bad fate called in Palace. The princess had been chosen and she had to be sacrificed. Sobbing she went to the place where the evil dragon was.

When she was about to die, a young rider appeared with a gold and shining suit of armour and riding a precious white horse. This rider was an honourable partisan, fighter rode of the Catalan horns, called Sant Jordi .

He saved the Princess and, in front of all the habitants of the village, he gave her a rose .Here is the origin of the 23rd of April, Saint George's Day.
