Montserrat

Montserrat is a mountain that is in the middle of Catalonia. It's famous because it has strange forms, because it was made in the sea's depth.

All the Catalans feel love, respect and veneration for this mountain, converting it in the Catalan's soul's unity.

Montserrat has an important Benedictin church. It was founded in the XI century for the Oliba abbot. From the XIV and XV century, Montserrat became the most important destination for Catalan pilgrins.

This religious community is famous for their "Escolania", a group of child singers.

Montserrat has a statue of the Virgin, called " La Moreneta". Her skin is black and her clothes are made of gold.

The legend says that three shepherds went to the mountain because it was raining. They went into a cave, and there they found "La Moreneta". They wanted to carry her to the town, but they couldn't, because "La Moreneta" wanted to stay in Montserrat, and then, they decided to build a sanctuary there.

Now, Montserrat has a market, too. You can go there by car, by a type of train called "Cremallera", or by funicular. In the market you can buy traditional catalan things, like "mató", honey, ... And souvenirs.

April 27th of 1947 was the day of the Moreneta's enthrone, and that day became a Catalan festivity.
