Lesson Plan 13

Warm Up

We introduce children to Mosaic, a Decorative Art in this movement, and one of its most important variety, the ‘Trencadís’, advocated as a decorative technique by Gaudí.

Mosaic is the art of decoration with small pieces of coloured glass, stone or other material. Small tiles or fragments of pottery or of coloured glass are used to create a pattern or picture.

"Trencadís" is a type of mosaic created from broken tile shards.

1.

Children look for some examples of mosaics in 'Modernisme' and 'Art & Crafts' corner.

2.
The children show and explain to the rest of the class what kind of mosaics they have found.
3.

Then we propose to our children that we are going to create a mosaic using the technique of ‘trencadís’. They can work individually or in pairs. We ask our pupils what kind of materials we are going to need.

A board, thin tiles, a hammer and silicone; and we will need especial gloves to work with the broken tiles.

4.

Then we show the children some more examples.

5.

They have to decide the kind of design they want for their board and what kind of colours they are going to use, therefore they have to sketch a preliminary drawing on a piece of paper.

We will write all together to a tile’s factory explaining our project and asking, if they possibly can, for some defective tiles.
