Process

 

The Place where the books and the scores were written is called Scriptorium it was rooms in the Monasteries. The monks made this task with much patience.

The material : they used to illuminate scores was called Codex it was a parchment done of the skin of lamb. They bought it in smaller Asia . If they doubled it through the middle it was called Bifolium , and if they doubled the middle through the middle they called it Booklet. Try to do it.

The transcription: the text was tiring and demanding; indeed the copyist. They distributed the text on one or two columns leaving free the spaces meant for the miniature.

The Rubrication: The titles of chapters, or   paragraphs, or the initials letters to be emphasized and normally they did with red ink. It remembers that the staff then only it also had 4 lines appears with red ink.

The illumination consists in the following steps:

  • Firstly, they drew the figures that could be animals, people, flowers, landscapes....they drew it with a metal point. You can do it with pencil.
  • Later they drew up the colors; they used brush strokes .You can do it with pencils colors.
  • This was the final operation, the illuminator passed with a brush a mixture of egg white and Arabic glue dissolved in water. By this way, they protected paintings so they did not spoil with the passage of time.
