WWW (World
Wide Web)
The WWW is by now the most popular
Internet service. There are millions of web sites which can be visited
on the web and everyone can publish their own WWW site. Browsing on the
net is not difficult. The only thing you have to know is what the
basic functions of a browser are and how they work.
There are different browsers
in the market. A browser is the program which allows you to visit the different
web sites. Netscape and Microsoft explorer are the most popular. In this
lesson you will learn a bit about Netscape Communicator. As with the mail
program you saw in unit 1, the basic buttons are always very similar. Click
below to know the basics of Netscape Communicator:
With this basic information
you can begin surfing on the internet. To make it easier, I will guide
you to do the surfing. I will take you to different interesting ESL sites.
You only have to read task

and click on the highlighted or hypertexted words or
phrases when you are told to do so. Hypertexted words usually come on a
different colour (in this case blue) and if you take the pointer there,
the arrow becomes a hand. This means that this word is linked to another
site. When you click there you are directly taken to a different web site.
You will save the URLs of
interesting places by using the bookmark facility. You will
begin by making a “bookmark” for this page (the one you are reading). You
do this by clicking on “bookmark” on the toolbar and then choosing “add
bookmark”. If you get lost in your surfing or want to come back to this
page, click on bookmark and you will see the page in the menu. You can
also use the back and forward buttons if you get lost.
