The British Tourist Authority
(BTA) is an official body set up by Parliament in 1969 under the Development
of Tourism Act (the Act). This Act also created the English, Scottish and
Wales Tourist Boards.
BTA's main job is to promote tourism to Britain from overseas.
BTA's main functions are:
-
to increase tourism spend in Britain from overseas;
-
to advise the Government and public bodies on tourism matters which affect
Britain as a whole;
-
to encourage the provision and improvement of tourist facilities and amenities
in Britain.
BTA receives funding from the Government, via the Department of National
Heritage, and boosts this with monies raised from commercial activities
and other private and public sector partnership initiatives.
