Resources for grammar
practice
Several on-line grammars
exist on the Web, ready to be used for all kinds of student level, age,
learning style and character. Grammar theory, practice, handouts, quizzes,
exercises and so on are available on the net. Some of these grammars, though,
are paper-based grammars which have been put up onto Web pages, while others
are specially designed for the Internet. Some of them are are very interactive
and even motivating for students. Following are the ones I found more interesting.
-
Hiway,
elementary grammar, a rather lightweight grammar aimed
at elementary students. There is a section for nearly each grammatical
feature: word order, definite sentences, relatives, prepositions, comparison
of adjectives, comparison of adverbs and so on. I strongly recommend to
use this grammar in class.
-
Edunet
has a much more comprehensive approach than Hiway,
although both sites are aper-based grammars which have been put up onto
Web pages, with a few added hyper links. Edunet has two interesting features
for our students:
-
An
Online English Grammar, offered
by The Hampstead School of English with an extensive table of contents
which widely covers almost every grammatical point a student would ever
need to consult.
-
English
Grammar Clinic , an outstanding
resource for students and teachers as well as those who just like the English
language. English grammar questions can be sent to this site, and the professional
teaching staff at Lydbury English Centre post the answer. There is also
a page of FAQs (frequently asked question) pages for speedy research and
the grammar café, for a chat with friends.
-
The
Grammar Safari from the Lingua
Center at the University of Illinois, offers an alternative approach,
explaining to students how to use the search facilities of the Web to retrieve
examples of usage, that is to say, a guide to finding English structures
in context on the WEB, especially good for taking upper-level students
out of the safe confines of the grammar book into the real world of English
grammar.
There are many other web sites
aimed at helping students with their English grammar, which offer interactive
grammar exercises and which allow visitors to ask questions about English
Grammar. Most of these sites are maintained by one person rather than a
school or institution and so might be not so popular and extensive as the
ones mentioned above. Nevertheless they can be very interactive and thus,
very useful to our students.
