In this page we explain you some traditions of Catalonia.
3 Magic Kings
6th
January is the three Magic Kings day. The
children write a letter for the Magic Kings asking for toys and more
toys. At night, the kings come to the children's houses and leave the
presents. If you are bad the three Magic Kings leave coal, but if you
are good they leave you a lot of things!!
The white King is called Melchor, the redhaired or brown is called Gaspart and the black is Baltasar.
Carnival
5th February (the date changes according to Easter) is the carnival!! On carnival day the people disguise in groups or single. People also burn a a gentleman of the carnival. The people dance in the streets, there is music everywhere and they say that on that day "one can break the rules". In our school we don't disguise because the teachers don't want to, but we disguise in the street on Saturday.
Sant Valentín
14th February is the San Valentín's day. On San Valentin's day, you give the presents for you boyfriend or you girlfriend. However it is not a very popular festivity in Catalonia, as we have "Sant Jordi's day"
Sant Jordi
23th April is the Sant Jordi's day. Sant Jordi is the patron of Catalonia. The girls give a book to the boys and the boys give a rose to the girls.
The human towers are practiced in street and it consists of forming piramides of people. The girl who is on the top is the smallest one. People go up on to other people, like if they were stairs. There are many people on the ground, to care for people who might fall down.
Demon (Diables)
These people dance and run around streets and hold crowds with crakers on the top. From time to time crackers explode and people run not to get burnt. This kind of "game" is celebrated in different towns, usually when is the party of this town, or on special days.The children, boy girls men, women... get into the crowds. It's very nice and funny, children love it, but it is also a bit dangerous. Participants disguise as demons. the "fire" lasts three quarters of an hour, more or less, it depens on the place.
