52. GOTHIC ART. It was a medieval art. It began in France in the mid-12th century, which continued until the late 15th century, where it evolved into Renaissance art

 

53. ROMANESQUE ART. It refers to the art of Western Europe from approximately 1000 AD to the rise of the Gothic style, which rose in the 13th century

 

 

54. CLOISTER. It’s constituted usually of four corridors, with a courtyard in the middle. It’s intended to be both covered from the rain, but open to the air.

 

55. FRESCO.  It consists of painting in pigment mixed with water on wet, fresh, lime mortar or plaster (intonaco).

INITIAL ACTIVITY. VOCABULARY OF POPULATION AND SOCIETY

 

  1. CONSTITUTION. The most important law in a country
  2. POPULATION DENSITY. It’s the number of persons per unit of area (hab/km²)
  3. LIFE EXPECTANCY. It’s a statistical measure of the average length of survival of a living thing.
  4. STATE. It’s a political association with effective dominion over a geographic area. It usually includes: borders, flag and army.
  5. TOTAL FERTILITY RATE. the number of live births per woman completing her reproductive life
  6. GLOBALIZATION. refers to increasing global connectivity, integration and interdependence in the all spheres
  7. LAW OF SUPPLY AND DEMAND. States that in a competitive free market, the price for a good will move towards the level where supply and demand for that good is equal.
  8. MIGRATION. Denotes any movement by humans from one locality to another often over long distances or in large groups.
  9. MULTINATIONAL CORPORATION. It’s a corporation or enterprises that manages production establishments or delivers services in at least two countries.

El percentatge de la població mundial que viu en l'extrema pobresa s'ha reduït en els últims 14 anys des del 32%, una de cada tres persones, fins al 19%, una de cada cinc, segons l'avaluació de l'anomenat Objectiu del Mil·lenni que avui presentarà a Ginebra el secretari general de l'ONU, Ban Ki-moon. L'Objectiu del Mil·lenni, un pla internacional per eradicar la fam i la misèria a l'horitzó del 2015, necessita la mobilització de recursos a favor del desenvolupament, una tendència que no progressa des de l'any 2004.
L'informe de l'ONU indica que les persones en extrema pobresa, les que viuen amb un dòlar diari, han passat de 1.250 milions a 980 milions entre el 1990 i el 2004, cosa que suposa una disminució del 13%, malgrat el notable augment demogràfic. Els màxims avanços s'aprecien al sud, sud-est i est de l'Àsia, tot i que alhora es manifesta un increment de la pobresa a l'Àsia occidental. L'Àfrica segueix sent el continent amb més percentatge de població pobra.



DESIGUALTATS SOCIALS


Malgrat els progressos generals, l'informe també adverteix que el nivell de consum dels més pobres s'ha reduït perquè s'estan aguditzant les desigualtats. L'Amèrica Llatina, el Carib i l'Àfrica subsahariana són les zones més afectades per aquest mal repartiment del creixement.


L'ONU verifica també una caiguda de la mortalitat infantil a causa de la rubèola, el paludisme i la tuberculosi, però no així de la sida. A més a més, un milió de dones moren cada any a causa de complicacions en els embarassos i parts. La meitat de la població dels països en desenvolupament continua sense accés a instal·lacions sanitàries mínimes.


Els índexs de matriculació a l'ensenyament primari van pujar el 8%, però encara falta obtenir l'escolarització d'un 12% dels nens del món per arribar a la plena formació el 2015. L'Àfrica subsahariana és la més afectada per les carències, amb 72 milions de nens que no van rebre formació escolar el 2005.


El creixement demogràfic ofereix avui la peculiaritat que 3.200 milions de persones viuen en ciutats, la meitat de la població mundial. I, si no s'inverteix la tendència, el 2030 seran 5.000 milions, sobretot pel creixement de les urbs de l'Àfrica i l'Àsia. En altres aspectes, apunta l'ONU en l'informe, la desforestació prossegueix a un ritme del 0,2% anual, mentre que l'efecte hivernacle creix més veloçment que les noves tecnologies ecològiques d'energia sostenible.


Els objectius de les Nacions Unides per al 2015 combinen l'eliminació de l'extrema pobresa, la universalització de l'ensenyament primari, la igualtat de sexes i l'autonomia de les dones, així com garanties per a la salut i el medi ambient. Ban Ki-moon proposa per a això l'abolició del deute extern dels països més febles econòmicament i que els estats rics destinin el 0,7% del seu pressupost a l'ajuda per al desenvolupament. Només cinc ho han fet fins ara: Dinamarca, Luxemburg, Holanda, Noruega i Suècia
