Assessment

Assessment is an integral part of the teaching and learning process and provides teachers with useful information about the pupils' achievements. Therefore, I will assess the children during the learning process, through continuous assessment (lessons 3, 6 and 9) and a final assessment (lesson 10).

A good way to assess this unit about Scottish Ceilidh Dancing is recording the dances on a video in order to watch the pupils dancing as many times as the teacher feels necessary. It allows the teacher to assess the pupils in relation to each of the criteria in the assessment sheets.

The criteria for assessment according to the aims of this unit are:

1- Stand in the right place in the space.

Each dance requires a different allocation in the space. For example, pupils should know if they have to be in a promenade position, in a square formation or in a longways set.

Another aspect to include is this criterion is if the couple are too near or too far away from the couple in front of them or behind them.

2- Hold partner properly

As each dance requires different holds, children have to hold their partner according to the steps in each dance and they should know when they have to change the hold.

3- Do the steps of this dance correctly

This means doing the steps of the dance that they are learning and repeating each sequence of movement correctly (without making mistakes).

4- Move according to the music.

This means following the rhythm of the music and doing the dance steps in time, in a coordinated way according to the music.

5- Evidence of progression.

Can the teacher observe an improvement from the first time children danced the dance? After teaching them the dance, are the children able to dance better? Can we notice an improvement each time they dance?

6- Comments.

Dance Assessment Sheet: t his space can be used for taking different notes about difficulties, aspects that can be improved upon...

Pupil Assessment sheet : this space can be used for taking notes about the children's ability to cope with the dance, e.g. concentration, the intricacies and behaviour.

The following assessment sheets can be a valuable resource for assessing and recording the needs and attainment levels of the pupils and the class. Information from these sheets can be used to report to parents. (This information should be used at the discretion of the teacher).

Dance Assessment Checklist:

Dance Assessment Checklists allow teachers to have useful information about the different aspects (described above) of each dance for all the students. Therefore, the teacher needs to have a dance assessment checklist sheet for each dance (total 6)
