Steps of the six chosen dances |
The six dances taught during this unit are:
• Gay Gordons
• Canadian Barn Dance
• Dashing White Sergeant
• Cumberland Square Eight
• Strip the Willow or Drops of Brandy
• Virginia Reel. |
Before focusing on the steps it is good to analyse some aspects involved in these dances. E.g. dance formation, dance position, moves and steps. All these concepts have been described in the "dance terms" chapter. (Click on the word if you need to know what it means).
As Ceilidh dancing does not insist on precise footwork, the description of steps is kept to a minimum. However, there are some more explanations in brackets, for those who want to learn the dances in a more precise way.
As it may be difficult to understand some of the dance steps described, there are some DVDs in order to clarify these steps. (See material and resources we can use). |
| GAY GORDONS |
This is a very lively Scottish party dance which has been popular for many years and still continues to find a prominent place at most ceilidh dances. In recent years, it has been slightly modified, making it more enjoyable for the ladies who now don't have to dance until they are dizzy doing turns!
• Dance Formation (Where do we stand?)
Promenade Position : Gent 's right hip to lady's left hip, both facing line of dance.
• Dance positions (How do we hold our partners?)
Begin this dance in shadow hold . Gent puts right arm over lady's shoulder to take her right hand. Left hands are joined in front. The gent stands slightly behind the lady.
There is a ballroom hold , too. Gent and lady face each other. The gent puts his right hand round the lady's waist. The lady puts her left hand on the gent's right shoulder. The lady puts her right hand into the gent's left hand, held slightly up and out to the left of his body.
• Steps
The steps are in march tempo.
Both gent and lady dance the same steps (with the same foot) as follows:

Four steps forward (left, right, left, right).
On count four, both turn while still holding hands. So, go right foot forward while making a half turn to the right to end facing against the line of dance.
Gent 's left arm is now over lady's shoulder, right hands joined in front. The lady should now be on the gent's left side.

Counts 5-8 |
Four steps backwards (left, right, left, right), facing against the line of dance.

Four steps forward (left, right, left, right), still against the line of dance.
On count four, both turn while still holding hands. Therefore, go forward on the right foot against the line of dance, making a half turn to the left to end facing the line of dance.
Back to original position, with gent's right arm over lady's shoulder, left hands joined in front.

The gent's and lady's steps are now different:
Release the left-hand hold.
Gent marches forward eight steps, turning the lady round under his right arm. So, gent raises his right arm to allow lady to turn two complete natural turns to the right under his raised arm.

| CANADIAN BARN DANCE |
• Dance Formation (Where do we stand?)
Promenade Position : Gent 's right hip to lady's left hip, both facing line of dance.
• Dance positions (How do we hold our partners?)
Begin this dance in an open hold– lady standing on the gent's right, her left hand holding his right hand. So couples hold inside hands (gent's right, ladies left).
Another version is that gent can put his right arm round the lady's waist, with the lady's left arm resting on the gent's shoulder.
There is a ballroom hold , too. Gent and lady face each other. The gent puts his right hand round the lady's waist. The lady puts her left hand on the gent's right shoulder. The lady puts her right hand into the gent's left hand, held slightly up and out to the left of his body.
• Steps
The steps are taken at a very slow running pace – a bit like a jog or a hop.

Four steps forward (gent begins left foot, lady right foot) and a kick (or a jump) on step four. ( Gent points right foot, lady points left foot).

| DASHING WHITE SERGEANT |
Undoubtedly, it is the jewel in the ceilidh crown. Danced to lively Scottish reels, the Dashing White Sergeant is a must for anyone connected with ceilidh dancing.
• Dance Formation (Where do we stand?)
Form circles of six round the dance floor, each made up of three facing three. These threes can be on lady or gent, with two of the opposite sex on either side. For the purposes of this explanation, the middle person will be a gent. Two groups of three face each other and the various sets of six dancers form a complete circle around the room. Each set of three progresses round the floor clockwise or anti-clockwise, dancing with a net set of three each time. See flashcard 3.
• Dance positions (How do we hold our partners?)
The gent stands in the middle, flanked by a lady at each side, with their inside hands linked. Then each set of six dancers form a circle with hands linked.
• Steps
Counts 1- 8 |
Each set of six joins hands to form a small circle and slip step left for eight. So circle to the left (clockwise) to the count of eight.

• Dance Formation (Where do we stand?)
Square set formation. Couples with their backs to the band and facing the band are called “head couples”, couples facing the sides of the dance floor are called “side couples”. Therefore, we have two head couples and two side couples.
• Dance positions (How do we hold our partners?)
Ballroom hold
• Steps
Head and side couples dance alternately until count 97.
Counts 1- 8 |
Head couples, in a ballroom hold , take eight slip steps sideways across the set, with gents of each couple passing backs.

Head couples form a basket , by standing close to each other.
Both gents put right arms round the waist of one lady and left arms round the waist of the other lady.
Both ladies put right arms round the neck of one gent and left arms round the neck of the other gent.
With right feet slightly forward, all four swing round clockwise for sixteen counts.
If the gents keep steady, ladies can lift their feet and swing on the gents' shoulders.
Gents should not try to lift the ladies.
“Head couples” fan un bàsquet, quedant-se junts un amb l'altre.

| STRIP THE WILLOW OR DROPS OF BRANDY |
This set dance has appealed to all ages for many years. Its lively music makes it popular in schools and at weddings, as well as at Ceilidhs. Therefore, this is one of the most popular dances and yet it has no strict form which fits into the usual length of tune.
• Dance Formation (Where do we stand?)
Longways set . This is danced with four couples in a longways set. Gents stand with their left shoulders to the band (or towards the top of the room), ladies facing their partners across the set (so lady has her right shoulder towards the top of the room).
• Dance positions (How do we hold our partners?)
No hold.
• Steps
The step is either a running step or a long-short side slip step . The tempo is a fast jig.
The first couple, the one nearest the stage, links their right arms and swing each other round at the top of the set for a count of 16.
La primera parella, la que està més a prop de l'escenari, s'agafa pels braços drets i va fent voltes (girant), sense moure's del cap de les files, fins a comptar fins a 16. |
The first lady turns the second gent (with her left arm) and then her partner, who moves down the set with her, (with her right arm).

As the first couple swings at the bottom of the set, the second couple swings at the top, for a count of 16, to repeat from the beginning.

| VIRGINIA REEL |
This is the most popular of the American square dances. A toe-tapping, hip-swinging dance, the Virginia Reel will have everyone up on the floor and raring to go.
• Dance Formation (Where do we stand?)
Longways set with four couples. Gents stand in the line with left shoulders towards the band, partners facing them across the set. Gent 's left shoulder and lady's right shoulder are towards the top of the room
• Dance positions (How do we hold our partners?)
No hold
• Steps
Counts 1- 4 |
All four couples take four steps in towards their partners, with a double clap on the fourth step.
Les quatre parelles avancen quatre passos cap a les seves parelles, i piquen de mans dues vegades al quart pas. |

All take four steps back to their original places, with a double clap on the fourth step.

All couples except the dancing couple make two-handed arches across the set.
Dancing couple face down the set and go under the arches to the bottom of the set. First couple should now be in fourth place and the second couple has become the first couple ready to start the dance again.
Repeated three more times with new top couples.
Totes les parelles, excepte la que balla, uneixen les dues mans i formen un arc al llarg de la formació o fila.
