What do we need to know

What is dance?

In dance there are five basic actions:

~ Travelling: moving through general space.

~ Turning : a movement involving rotation around an axis.

~ Jumping: taking off into the air and landing.

~ Gesture : a movement which does not involve transference of weight (no travelling).

~ Stillness : the ability to stop and control the body.

In order to develop the basic actions the teacher must ask herself and pupils three questions:

•  Where are you moving? Space

•  How are you moving? Weight (effort) and time (strong/light); (quick/ slow)

•  With whom are you moving? Relationship

The factors of space, weight and time are involved within every movement.
