Warm up

Knowing the rules

The teacher asks the group to form a circle, the teacher may challenge them by saying they have 10 second to do it. Once the circle is formed, the parachute can be opened and the group should pick a colour on the parachute and hold this colour with both hands, with everyone stepping backwards to stretch out the parachute fully. The parachute should then be held at waist height, whilst the teacher goes over the 5 basic rules:

•  Do not hold onto or put hands through the black handles.

•  No body parts should go through the centre “air” hole.

•  If asked to go under the parachute, do so in a safe, appropriate manner.

•  If asked to go on top of the parachute, crawl onto it do not walk onto it, the same applies on the way off it.

•  Listen to your teacher at all times.

Once this is completed you are ready to start playing the games.

Main Part

Colours

All the children should stand in a circle holding the rim of the parachute. Each child must ensure that they are holding one colour only. There are four different colours on the parachute (red, yellow, green and blue) and when the teacher counts to three all the children should stand up and raise the parachute above their heads to create a “mushroom”. At this point the teacher will call out a colour and all the children holding the colour shouted must walk under the parachute and grab hold of a section of the same colour at the opposite side.

Sharks

All children should sit in a circle holding the rim of the parachute with their legs straight out under the parachute. These children are the wave makers.

The group leader/teacher selects the following:

•  One child to be a “shark” who goes below the parachute.

•  Two children to be lifeguards who stand around the edge of the parachute.

The aim of the game is for the sharks to try and pull the children around the parachute underneath. If a child starts to get pulled under they will have to wave their hands in the air and call for help from one of the lifeguards. If the lifeguard gets to them in time they have to gently pull them from under the arms to safety. If the lifeguard fails to save a child and that child gets pulled under they become a shark too. The game continues until the leader calls out loudly “5,4,3,2,1 and everybody back to their space”.

Parachute tennis

The children are divided into two teams, “A” and “B”. The parachute is divided into two halves. One half is team “A”s territory; the other half is team “B”s. The children stand, holding the parachute at waist height. The sponge ball is places in the middle. Team “A” has to try and shake the ball over to team “B”s side and vice versa. Children must keep hold of the parachute at all times; they cannot use their hands to stop the ball going over their head. They may use their head to keep the ball on the parachute. Each time a team succeeds, they win a point and the ball is returned to the centre.

Calm Down

Whose shoes

Before beginning this game, teacher asks all the children to lift the parachute above their heads and look at each other's shoes. Then teacher chooses a child to sit under the centre of the parachute, which is draped over the child. The other children must then all switch positions around the parachute. The children grasp the parachute in both hands and raise it to knee level, making sure that the child underneath can see only their legs and shoes. Tap one child on the shoulder. They begin to march on the spot. The child in the centre has to guess the marcher's identity from their shoes. If they are successful, the children swap places. If not, the child guessing has one more turn.

Observations

When the teacher explains the rules about how to use the parachute it is very important that he/she demonstrates the rules, in order to reinforce what he/she is explaining so pupils can understand these rules.

We can work with the four basic colours through the activity four.
